About Me

We are a group of Girl Guides who plan to travel to Kenya in 2013. We are looking forward to truly seeing the world by opening ourselves up to a great opportunity to work alongside local communities, developing friendships and supporting community development! This will be a once in a lifetime adventure for all of us!

Back to Blogging

We haven't blogged in soooo long...

Maybe it's because we've hosted a night of wonderful musical entertainment, baked for 40 plus hours, and are starting our campaign to collect old cell phones in quest to win $1000!  Yes, we have been busy!

It is hard to believe that we've been working on fundraisers and planning our trip now for almost 2 years!  And in just another 16 months we will be leaving.

In a effort to keep you updated we've started to twitter.  Follow us there @africabound2013!

Thank you all for your support :)

We want your garbage.....

We had fun putting together our recycling boxes for our newest project.....

We are very excited that it's not only a project that will help generate funds for our trip, but also to help keep our earth a little greener!! :)

We are collecting ink cartridges, toner cartridges, old iPods, MP3 players, digital cameras, laptops and cell phones.  They will be sent away for recycling and our group will receive funds for each piece that meets the requirements of the recycling program.  Watch for our drop boxes throughout the city.
One drop box is currently located at Computer Boyz on 18th Street.

Inspiring....

I have a sample itinerary for our trip.  I could hardly keep it together after reading it.  This is going to be the most amazing and inspiring thing I've ever done!

Of course being 2 years away things could change a little....  but you'll get the idea :)

Here are a few things we will be participating in:
  • Building a school
  • Swahili lessons
  • Journey down the Mara River to see where families in the region collect water and help bring back some water for the family who has will welcome us into their home for a few hours
  • Discuss the impact of water and the challenges that are felt by all members of the community, particular the Mamas and the girls.
  • Learn about traditional medicine and help out in the medicinal gardens for part of a day
  • Regenerate Kenya's forest by volunteering at a tree nursery
  • Campfire!
  • Visit a giraffe sanctuary
  • Visit a family where a chimney is being installed in their home (newest health initiative).  Help the family  make bricks by hand or prep the cans and pipes for installation
  • Organized games with the Children in the community
  • Safari Day
  • Learn the importance of traditional weapons
  • Performing arts day with students
  • try carving with a local Men's group
  • Action planning for our return home
  • Shopping at a market

Oh....deliveries!!

Delivery day was fun.  I must say any day with Joyce is amusing!  I'm really only blogging about our adventures cause she said I shouldn't!!!  She only thinks that cause she got my phone stuck in her flippy cup holder in the car.  Many thanks to Caleb who took a couple of screws out and got my phone back.  Really, it was not a big deal, just super funny.  There sits my phone, ringing and beeping, but I couldn't answer it.  I thought for sure it was someone famous and I was missing my chance!  I especially liked all the blank texts that were sent out on my behalf as we squeezed our fingers in beside it, trying to get it out!!  LOL  Maybe it was all the baking....or was it the lack of sleep that made it so funny.

Anyways, after getting lost a couple of times and having to phone Jasmine and my Dad for directions all the sweets made it to their final destinations safely!  The only thing missing was the couple of ginger sparklers we snuck out of the extras box.  Breakfast of champions!
